Selfies & Blessings ๐Ÿ“ท๐Ÿ“ท

Asalamun alaykum ๐Ÿ˜Šโ˜บ๏ธ

Before I start , I’d like to say that this is a controversial issue as there’s difference of opinions among the scholars .๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ’ญ
But I’m presenting the strongest & safest view ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ’ฏ .

Please read this with an open mind ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

May Allah make it easy for us all ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ’—

Photography (tasweer) means the taking of pictures of living, animate moving beings, like people, animals, birds, etc. The ruling is that it is forbidden on the basis of a number of reports, such as the following:

๐Ÿ”จ’Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Those who will be most severely punished by Allaah on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, see al-Fath, 10/382).

๐Ÿ“ Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every image-maker will be in the Fire, and for every image that he made a soul will be created for him, which will be punished in the Fire.” Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “If you must do that, make pictures of trees and other inanimate objects.” (Reported by Muslim, 3/1871)
๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘These ahaadeeth indicate that pictures of animate beings are haraam, whether they are humans or other creatures, whether they are three-dimensional or two-dimensional, whether they are printed, drawn, etched, engraved, carved, cast in moulds, etc. These ahaadeeth include all of these types of pictures ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜

In the book Al-I’laam bi naqd kitaab al-halaal wa’l-haraam, the author says: “Photography is even more of an imitation of the creation of Allaah than pictures which are engraved or drawn, so it is even more deserving of being prohibitedโ€ฆ There is nothing that could exclude photography from the general meaning of the reports.” (p. 42, see also Fataawa Islamiyyah, 4/355) ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ’ญ

Okay, so the evidences have been clearly stated ๐Ÿ‘€

There are exceptions though .

Making images and pictures of animate beings is completely forbidden at all times, except when there is an essential reason for doing so, such as a photo for a passport, or for identification documents, or to show pictures of suspects so that they will be recognized, or testing purposes, or when applying for a job, and other ways in which trickery may be prevented or security protected. In this case a concession is granted, only as much as is essential. ๐Ÿ‘Œ ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Now, the big question โ“

Why do we take pictures ? ๐Ÿ’ญ

The most important reason why people take pictures is for Tabarruj ๐Ÿ’ฃ๐Ÿ’ฃ

Gbam๐Ÿ”จ๐Ÿ”จ

C’est fini โ˜‘๏ธ

That’s all ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘Œ

So what is Tabarruj ? ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ’ญ

To put simply, it means “wanton display ”

I mean, we take pictures so that we can post it & people like it & tell you how beautiful you look.

That’s a superficial way to live & sadly we’re all suffering from it ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿ˜ฐ
๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ’ฌ Imam Al-Albanee (rahimahullaah) said: โ€œTabarruj is when a woman exposes her adornment, body features and all that she is obligated to cover which invites the desires of menโ€. (Marโ€™at-il-Muslimah, page 54)

Another reason is for memories ๐ŸŽ€

Shaykh Ibn โ€˜Uthaymeen said, when he was asked about pictures: “making pictures for this purpose is haraam and is not permitted. That is because making pictures for memories is haraam …”

This excuse is the most painful ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Instead of experiencing things , we get caught up in taking a picture that we miss the occurrence .

For example , a baby’s first steps . When some mothers notice this, they rush to get their phones so they can take a picture instead of them just experiencing it ๐Ÿ˜‘๐Ÿ˜‘

Another example is if a building is burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

People get caught up in taking pictures than rather helping to stop the fire ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Those are the 2 most important reasons I can think of .

If you have any others ,please leave a comment ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Œ

To be very honest, I used to be a selfie freak ๐Ÿ™ˆ Taking a thousand pictures a day & uploading on Instagram โฌœ๏ธ
My biggest problem was not getting enough likes ๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿ˜•

But when I started practicing Islam, the real deal, I found out that my selfies game had to stop โŒโŒ

But howโ“

It’s really difficult to stop something you’ve been doing for a long while ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I took  it step by step , one day at a time ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜

I deleted my pictures on social media &

I stopped taking new pictures .

It wasn’t easy at all but the reminder that I didn’t want to be one of the most severely punished people was what got me going ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ

This worked for me but it might not work for you . You just have to find out what works for you.

Stop those selfies &  do what’s right โœ”๏ธโœ”๏ธ

Go halal , make videos ๐Ÿ‘Œ

p.s ; videos don’t fall under tasweer because it’s moving & not static & if you really really want to take pictures, do it without your face { Prophet (SAW) said  the eyes is the image } but then , remember tabarruj ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

Be mindful of Allah so you’re not deprived of His blessings ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

.
